The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 empowers every citizen to access information held by public authorities. It promotes transparency, accountability, and good governance by ensuring that citizens have the legal right to request and obtain information from government institutions.

Right to Know
Every citizen has the legal right to obtain information, inspect records, and receive certified copies of documents relating to the administrative, developmental, and regulatory functions of the Local Self Government Institution, except those exempted under the law.
Applications for information shall be submitted to the Secretary in the prescribed format.
An application fee of ₹2 must accompany the application. Records older than one year require an additional search fee of ₹2 per year.
Copies of documents are issued at ₹2 per approximately 200 words. The inspection date or collection date for certified copies will be notified.
Requests involving confidential information may be rejected with valid written reasons.
If information is not provided within the prescribed period, the responsible officer may be liable to pay a penalty of ₹50 per day.
If information is deliberately withheld or false information is provided, a minimum penalty of ₹1,000 may be imposed under the provisions of the Act.
If the requested records cannot be located after a reasonable search, have exceeded the prescribed retention period, or no longer exist, the applicant will be informed accordingly.
Decisions taken in good faith are protected by law. If the requested information cannot be supplied, any fee already collected shall be refunded to the applicant.
